ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  The Southern Baptist Convention is struggling during the recession like many businesses and families.

Giving to missions is at a historic low. Church membership dropped off last year, and baptisms are at their lowest level in two decades.

First Baptist Church of Albany is actually bucking that trend. Pastor Butch Knight thinks that's partly because they recently moved to a new location.

He says at the Southern Baptists' annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky this week, leaders will discuss ways to get back to the core missions of the church.

"Which will probably do some streamlining, it will effect how dollars are spent and things like that," said First Baptist Church Pastor Butch Knight.  "It will also, the goal, is to try to refocus the Convention on what the Convention should be really about in terms of reaching people for the Lord."

Knight believes the decrease in missions giving directly correlates to fewer Baptisms since the unchurched are not being reached.
