An instant classic

December 21, 2002

The third day of action in the WALB Holiday Classic lived up to its name Saturday night at the Albany Civic Center as the semifinal matchup between second ranked Westover and number three Monroe was just that, a classic.

After the Tornadoes jumped out of the gates to an early lead the Patriots clawed back, creating several points off of a tenacious full court press and pulled within one, 35-34,of Monroe at the half.

The second half picked up right where the first half left off.  Every time Monroe would begin to pull away, the Patriots would come up with a big bucket and keep the Tornadoes within striking distance.  In the end though, it was the Tornadoes hitting key free throws down the stretch and hanging on to a 62-59 win.  Monroe's Demetric Bennett led all scorers with 27 points while also pulling down 11 rebounds.  Allen Jenkins topped the scoring for Westover, pouring in 14.  With the win, Monroe advances to the championship game on Monday at 8:30 in the Albany Civic Center where they will face Dougherty, 72-65 winners over Tift County Saturday.
