ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The summer season has many families looking for fun but the American Red Cross hopes they'll fit in some time to save lives.

The Albany Blood Donor Center is in the midst of a "Dog Days of Summer" promotion. They're looking for people to help them reach their 1,200 donors a day goal across the state. They need 14-people a day to donate in Albany.

As an incentive this summer, donors can win free spaying or neutering services for their pets.

"We partnered with the Albany Humane Society this summer. From now through the beginning of September, we're giving away one free spay neuter a week to one lucky donor and that way we can control the pet population and save some lives by getting some blood donors in," said Andrew Everett with the American Red Cross.

In Dougherty County only about 3-percent of the population donates blood. You can help out by visiting the Albany Donor Center on Dawson Road. They're open Monday through Saturday.
