ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An East Albany man who's running for mayor is warning about internet scams.

Kirk Smith says he investigated a scam e-mail that claims a South African government official will pay nine million dollars if you help get 30-million dollars out of the country.

Smith said he followed the scam, which eventually demanded $5000.  Smith said it's a convincing con.  He warns people not to fall for it.

Smith said "This type of stuff feeds on elderly people. It feeds on people with money problems, on financial problems. And I feel like here local I need to let the people know. "

Smith said he has been in contact with South Africa government officials about the scam and hopes to talk to Congressional members about foreign-based Internet Scams.
