ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Economic development leaders are trying to use their relationship with the Marine Base to attract more businesses to the area.

The base currently uses many outside contractors to perform work for them. Albany leaders want those contractors to be based in Albany, so they're encouraging them to move here. That would bring more jobs to Albany and may grow the capabilities at MCLB which could result in even more jobs.

EDC President Ted Clem said, "Can we find opportunities to grow the kind of jobs that we have out there and actually attract more contractors, more businesses to the area that will bring their own capabilities, will bring their own talents to the area and therefore increase the amount of work that can be done at the base here."

Economic Development Commission members hope to have a more in-depth meeting to discuss ways to increase businesses interested in moving to Albany for work with the base in August.
