Albany - Smallpox is a highly contagious disease. To combat a possible smallpox terrorist attack the Department of Defense is creating a nationwide vaccination plan. The plan starts with military personnel who are going into high threat areas and emergency response teams.

The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany will more than likely be at the end of the list. They have not received an order to vaccinate. The base doesn't have deployable units, which means there's not an urgent need.

A Department of Defense representative says by the time an order gets to a non deployable base, the vaccine could be available to the public.

Military smallpox vaccinations ended in 1990, routine vaccinations for US citizens ended in 1972.
