VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A Republican candidate for governor says his popularity with Democrats and Independents could be his key to winning the race.

Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner John Oxendine visited a joint meeting of the Valdosta Rotary Clubs today. He spoke about legislative issues and answered questions.

Oxendine says he has a history of getting support from Independent voters.

"The key is, you've got the Republican vote, you've got the Democratic vote, but you've also got those Independents that could go either way," says Commissioner Oxendine.  "Those Independents in Georgia, year after year, have switched over in predominantly Democratic communities and have voted for me.  Places like Columbus, Macon, Valdosta, and Albany, that are traditionally Democratic have consistently voted for me."

Oxendine believes the regionalizing of policies is currently hurting the state.  He says there should be more unity to promote success for all regions of Georgia.
