ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Service and faith organizations hold a planning day to look for solutions to help a growing homeless problem in Albany.

More than 60 people took part in the planning day at the First United Methodist Church for the Albany Dougherty Coalition to End Homelessness.   The strategy session is the brainchild of 23-year old Albany State University student Joleigh Sartiano.

For a summer research project, she's trying to revitalize the coalition and develop more transitional housing for the homeless.

"Not only do I gain research experience, but what I learn from this is going to benefit the community," said Homelessness Coalition Coordinator Joleigh Sartiano.  "So it's nice to put forth the effort, and hopefully see an outcome everyone can benefit from."

Coalition workers say they are seeing a sharp increase in the homeless in Albany and a different group of people who are homeless.

In the past most homeless had mental health or drug problems. Now they're seeing more people who have lost their jobs and homes.
