ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Employees at an Albany grocery store donated thousands of dollars to the United Way.

Albany Publix store manager Garrett Tukes presented United Way President Dwayne Myles a check for $14,400, the payroll contribution of the store's employees last year.

The United Way says the money's badly needed because contributions are down and the need for assistance is up.

"Absolutely, that is a lot of money. Somehow folks still got the good heart to give it," Tukes said.

"With the increase of job layoffs, it's kind of tough to collect money from employees no longer working at the company. So that's one of our main concerns, but we'll continue to work for the community," Myles said.

Publix Corporation has been a long time sponsor of the United Way, with gifts of more than $20 million.
