ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Two-time WSGA Amateur winner Virginia Derby Grimes had to feel she had 14-year old Alexis Thompson right where she wanted her after Grimes won the 29th hole to even their championship match.
The teenage Thompson then unleashed four consecutive iron shots that led to four birdies and a 4&3 victory at the WSGA Amateur.
The two players were tied after the first 18 where Thompson eagled the par-4 eighth hole.
Thompson was one up after 27.
After Grimes birdie at 11, Thompson hit her tee shot at the par-3 12th about five feet from the hole and she sank the birdie putt to reclaim the lead.
At the par-5 13th, Thompson hit her second shot pin hit and about six feet for the cup.
Grimes conceded the hole after she made par and Thompson missed the eagle putt.
Thompson hit another spectacular iron at 14 to within three feet for another short birdie putt and three hole lead with four to play.
Grimes responded at 15 with her approach landing about ten feet from the flag.
Thompson answered with another precision approach that almost went in for an eagle.Grimes left her birdie putt just short while Thompson sank another short birdie putt for the win 4 &3.
Alexis Thompson said. "I had some wedges in and I tried to take advantage of it. I knew had to make birdies because she hit it close everytime but her putter let her down just a bit. But she played really great."
Laura Coble defeated Susan Rheney 4 & 2 to win the championship consolation bracket.
Ana Garcia won the first flight 3 & 2 over Tiffany Phelps.
Waycross' Alei Mitchell falls 1-up to Anna Schultz in the final for the second flight.
