CAMILLA, GA (WALB) - Young farmers and 4-H'ers got a hands-on lesson in irrigation and water use today in the field.

The 4-H-2-O summer camp started today at the Camilla Stripling Irrigation Research Park.

Kids in 4-H clubs learned all about water conservation, irrigation systems, wells, GPS systems in the fields, and much more.

They even got to play in the water under the hot sun.

The goal was to make learning fun and educate kids early about the importance of water and water conservation Especially here in south georgia.

"In Georgia, our crops are always one or two days from the next drought period. If we don't get rain, it's critical that we have irrigation water available because our soils just don't hold a lot of water," said Calvin Perry with Stripling Irrigation Research Park.

Six educational stations were set up.

About 60-youngsters participated. Wednesday the camp continues in Albany at the Flint Riverquarium.

Much of the funding for the event came from the Stripling Family.
