Family and neighbors of Leroy Champion started to get suspicious when they hadn't seen nor heard from him this month. The 68-year-old hadn't been seen around the Bethel Housing Project, and the always timely tenant hadn't pay his rent or utility bills.
So his son went to the Swift Street apartment about noon. He found the door unlocked, and his father lying on the other side of the couch. He told us he ran from the home quickly, he couldn't tell how he died, but knew he'd been dead for some time.
Maintenance Supervisor James Stokes said, "Why everybody got suspicious about it, just talking about it this morning, knew something probably wrong."
The Dougherty County District Attorney assisted in this afternoon's investigation, which is still being treated like a homicide. The body was sent to the crime lab in Moultrie where an autopsy will be done tomorrow morning.
