Albany-- One in eight American women will get breast cancer. For many women who have a life-saving mastectomy, a breast prosthesis is the first step to regaining body symmetry and self confidence.

There are several types of prosthesis. One kind is self supporting. It has a medical grade adhesive that sticks to human skin. But, some women choose instead to purchase a prosthesis that fits snugly inside a specially made bra. Carlton Breast Health Center Nurse Marilyn Garey says, "It gives the lady her silhouette shape, the slope very similar to natural breast and she can go about her life."

The newest type of prosthesis is a lightweight version. A breast prosthesis costs around $300.00, covered by insurance.

As a reminder, it is the tenth day of the month, Buddy Check 10 Day. So please call your friend and tell them to do their breast self examination.

And if you'd like a Buddy Check 10 packet call Phoebe Putney Hospital at 312-4402.
