ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Rates are going up for Water, Gas and Light customers. At Thursday's commission meeting, WG&L board members voted to approve the upcoming budget, including two built in rate increases for water and gas.

Water rates will go up 10%. For an average residential customer, that's an increase of about two dollars. Gas prices will go up around 8%... an average increase of about five dollars during peak usage periods.

John Vansant said, "The water department has been running a deficit because the water sales have been low. Some of that is weather related and then the water restrictions play a big role in that and the gas department hasn't had a rate increase in ten years."

The rate increases will help balance the budget, which was facing a $1.6 Million shortfall even after other cuts and a transfer of MEAG funds.
