ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany leaders are making plans for thousands of dollars in federal stimulus money.

The city is getting more than $309,000 for community development projects. Tuesday night, commissioners approved amending the city's action plan to make way for the money and new plans.

$100,000 will be used to rehabilitate the Ritz Cultural Center. Another $100,000 will help investors rehab homes for low to moderate income families.

Albany Police hope a federal grant will help them reduce crime in target areas of the city. City commissioners gave APD permission to apply for a $250,000 Weed and Seed Grant.

It would be the third Weed and Seed initiative in Albany. This one would target a one square mile area in east Albany. The grants help revitalize areas that have problems with crime, neglect and poverty.

A committee of community and police leaders will come up with specific plans on how to spend the money.
