ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire at an apartment complex.

The fire started about 9:30 Friday night at Westwood Apartments between West Broad and West Oglethorpe.

One resident told us he was inside his apartment and heard a noise.

He opened his door and saw the fire burning in the stairwell.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put it out as his wife got their child out and warned neighbors.

Unfortunately, the extinguisher didn't work, and the fire spread quickly.

At least four units sustained substantial smoke damage, but no one was hurt.
