Leesburg, GA (WALB) - Lee County Middle School's athletic department received a life-saving gift today in honor of a student's mother who lost her life.

Wednesday morning LCMS eighth graders presented the school athletic department with a heart defibrillator in memory of Angie McCallister who passed away a few weeks ago.

McCallister's son is an eighth grade student. He, along with his classmates, help raise nearly $2000.00  to purchase the defibrillator which during an emergency can save someone's life.

"The eighth graders wanted to do something special for him and in his mom's memory. And that seemed like an appropriate thing to do," said April Smith, 8th grade teacher.

"It's a big honor for our family, especially how this community rallied around behind us. To have something like this donated in her memory, it was special for us," said Rob McCallister.

McCallister's family was on hand for the dedication which kicked off LCMS field day.

Students raised the money through homeroom competitions and even held a car wash with the Lee County Police Explorers to purchase the device.
