ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Dougherty County commissioner is traveling abroad to offer her expertise to leaders in South Africa.

Commissioner Gloria Gaines will travel to South Africa next week with other Conference of minority transportation officials. She'll be a guest of South Africa's Minister of Transport.

It's a trip she has made almost every year since 1993. "We believe, I think, that we've made a small contribution to that budding democracy in that part of the world and we've continued that relationship over the years and it's just been a very rewarding relationship, I believe, for both sides."

Commissioner Gaines is a transportation consultant who worked with Marta during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

She's hopeful her advice will help South Africa deal with mass transit crowds expected during the World Cup soccer tournament in 2010.
