ALBANY, GA (WALB) - More than 20 Dougherty County School System employees expressed interest in an early retirement program. Employees had to notify system administrators by 4 Friday afternoon if they wanted to take part in what is being called the Alternate Career Incentive Plan.

It was offered to more than 300 employees as an incentive to try to save money during a tight budget year. Employees with 25 to 29-years of service will get 15-percent of their salary if they retire. Those with more than 30-years are eligible for 25-percent of their salary.

Robert Lloyd said, "The goal is to save money and flush out of the system those people who were considering retirement but hadn't decided to retire but now have."

Final figures won't be known until Monday, but late this afternoon, 22 employees had expressed an interest in the program. Most of those were employees with 30 plus years experience. They still aren't required to take the deal. It's a completely voluntary program.
