ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Hundreds of Dougherty County and Lee County students gathered Friday for the 2009 Special Olympics Dougherty Spring Games.

Students from 10 schools in Dougherty and Lee County took part in the spring games. They competed in track and field, volleyball, bocce, and other sporting activities.

Other high school and Albany State students helped organize the games.

"Special Olympics is so important for our students because it gives an opportunity to come out and let the community know that what they are doing throughout the year. They are able to participate in different athletic events," said A.S.U. Special Olympics Coordinator Lori Burnett.

All the athletes received ribbons and awards, to honor them for their competition.
