Good and bad news for phone customers

Albany - Your mobile phone bill could go up soon, but your long-distance will likely drop. The FCC requires long distance carriers to give about 7% of their revenue to a program to help pay for phone service for customers who can't afford it. Mobile phone companies don't have to give to the program.

The FCC is considering charging the cellular companies and reducing the burden for long distance providers. Both Alltel and Cellular One told us it was premature to say just how much your bill will go up, if the fee is approved. The Alltel Spokesperson did say the increase would not be drastic.
