Heritage House won't die

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Once again it looks like the old Heritage House in downtown Albany may have future life.

The city of Albany was about to open up the bidding process for asbestos abatement and demolition of the Heritage House on West Oglethorpe Boulevard, after the owner ran into financial trouble and couldn't revitalize the building.

Now, that owner, Marvin Baptiste is going through foreclosure, but the second lien holder is interested in developing the property.

"He brought an architect, a banker, some real estate people to the table and talked about his plans for the property and we're waiting to see that come to fruition,"said Code Enforcement Director Mike Tilson.

The city should know by mid-June whether the new owner plans to move forward with development, or if they will need to look into demolition which could cost taxpayers as much as a million dollars.
