Former ASU basketball player, coach passes away

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Albany State mourning the death of former basketball great and assistant coach Melvin Jones.

Melvin Jones died last week at the age of 63.

Melvin Jones is one of the famed Jones family who played for Albany State in the 1960's and 70's.

Melvin and brothers Oliver, Wilbert, Caldwell, Major and Charles Jones all played for Albany State.

Jones had 1926 rebounds during his career with the Rams and led them to a conference and district championship in 1968.

Later that year Melvin Jones was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA draft.

He was an assistant for older brother and former longtime Albany State head coach Oliver Jones.

Melvin Jones was inducted into the Albany State Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Melvin Jones will be buried at Andersonville National Cemetery on Tuesday.
