Camilla, GA (WALB) - Dozens lined up before the center opened Wednesday in Camilla at the 911 center.

A hundred people are registered for disaster assistance in Mitchell county.

And in the first three hours, 25 people showed up to ask questions and fill out applications.

FEMA representatives say it can't hurt to stop by.

"Everyone who has suffered damage who lives in a declared county, should register," said FEMA Public Affairs Officer Don North.  "We often find that after the insurance checks are received, and things are over with, that there's some other unexpected damage occurs. And if they're registered, they're protected."

Those eligible for relief should get a check in the mail within two weeks.

So far, 770 people have registered for assistance through FEMA around south Georgia.

The center in Camilla will be open through Saturday from 8AM to 7PM.

  • Applicants in all areas may apply on line at www.disasterassistance.gov or by phone at 1-800-621-3362. You can call 8AM to 6PM seven days a week. Multi language service available.  TTY: 1-800-462-7585.
