ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Girl power was celebrated and awarded in Albany.

Girls Incorporated held their annual awards night ceremony Tuesday night with a Cinco De Mayo theme. The theme is fitting as they begin a Latina Initiative to reach out to more hispanic girls in the community.

Members were honored for everything from their involvement in community and sports to academic achievements. Organization leaders say it's good to award them for their successes in life.

"It reinforces the fact that their participation in programming is important. They are awarded for a lot of different things.  Anyone in our program that participates can be awarded tonight," said Girls Inc. of Albany Executive Director LaKisha Bryant.

Three deserving young ladies received a big award--Girl of the Year. They are Lashambria Ellerbee of the Park Place Center, Hannah Jones from the East Albany Center and Alexandria Washington of Terrell County.
