Rescue Mission resident charged with murdering volunteer

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -A woman who lived at the Albany Rescue Mission is now charged with murdering a woman who ministered to her at the homeless shelter.

88-year old Mabel Berry was the first Women's Director at the Rescue Mission. She spent years counseling and ministering to the women there.

Police say one of those women beat Berry to death at her home on West Highland Avenue yesterday.

The Founder of the Albany Rescue Mission says Sunday's murder of 88 year old Mabel Berry totally shocked him. Police say 33 year old Tiffany Wise, who lived at the Rescue Mission for more than a year, beat her to death in a robbery attempt.

Brother Larry Hample said "Such a sad thing. Nobody should have to die like that. Let along an 88 year old woman, that's just given her life for these people."

Sunday afternoon about 1:30 neighbors on West Highland called Police, reporting screams from Berry at her house. Officers spotted blood on her front door knob, and then saw through windows more blood inside her home. Officers broke in the home,but found Berry dead in the backyard. Investigators say it was a very violent murder that deeply disturbed them, but would not say what the murder weapon was.

Detective Terrence Whitlock said "There was blunt force trauma."

Investigators say while they were still investigating the murder, Wise's family brought her to the Police Headquarters to confess.

Detective Charlie Roberts said "Immediately she went home and discussed it with her family. And the Mother along with the sisters decided you need to go to the Police."

Berry was the Albany Rescue Mission's first women's director, and still volunteered there.

Hample said "A sincere Christain, devoted her life. She even had a prison ministry."

Brother Hample said Wise had drug problems, and attended Berry's bible study classes at the Mission.

Hample said "She has been here well over a year, and she has done well. She was a cook and actually assistant director for a while. And she was recently excited she got this job."

Wise had left the Mission on a weekend pass to stay with her Mother. Brother Hample said the other residents at the Rescue Mission are in mourning, after one of their members is arrested for murdering Mabel Berry.

Wise is being held without bond in the Dougherty County jail on charges of malice and felony murder and aggravated assault.
