ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It's a proud day for hundreds of Albany State University graduates. And it seems to be a family theme with all the pomp and circumstance. Family and friends cheered on as 311 students walked across the stage to receive their degrees Saturday morning.

Among the group was a mother and daughter graduating duo, Tabitha and Brittany Newkirk. Tabitha graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Social Work. Brittany majored in Chemistry and will be attending FAMU's School of Pharmacy.

"It's never to late for anyone. Education is our family theme, and it is never to late. Never," said Tabitha Newkirk.

"It's exciting and a blessing," said Brittany Newkirk.

Rita James, Aretha Tinson and Deborah George are three sisters who also received their Masters degrees. This experience was especially meaningful for Tinson because she lost her husband as she was working toward her degree.
