ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An ardent supporter of President Obama, and an Albany community leader who lived an extraordinary life, died this week.
William R. Rice was an English and Foreign Language professor at Albany State University for 41 years.
He served in the Air Force or Air Force Reserves for 38 years. He traveled the world and spoke five languages.
Last year, Rice helped open Barack Obama's Albany campaign office and on election night expressed his joy to us on live television.
Rice attended President Obama's inauguration and saw the first couple at one of their inaugural balls.
He died Sunday from colon cancer at age 79.
Rice will be remembered at a prayer vigil and tribute Sunday at 6 o'clock at Union Missionary Baptist Church and a funeral mass Monday at 10 o'clock at St. Teresa's.
He'll be buried with full military honors at Andersonville National Cemetery.
