ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Volunteers were hard at work Tuesday inside the National Guard Armory in Albany distributing several thousand pounds of food to those in need.

Nearly one thousand people lined up, some as early as 6:00 a.m. for the food giveaway. The Dougherty County Neighborhood Service Center gave away hundreds of grocery bags filled with canned fruits, vegetables, and cereal.

With unemployment above 8% in the Albany area, people are looking for any way to feed their families.

Organizers and recipients are thankful for the help at a time when so many are in need.

"We have a lot of dedicated, devoted, and dependable volunteers that come and help us. And we would not be able to do it without them,"  said Ben Jackson of the Dougherty Co. Neighborhood Service Center.

"I work part time and they've cut my hours," said Bernice Sapp. "So I have to come and get food. I can't hardly buy food. I know a bunch of these people out here, they're affected too. We appreciate the food that they give us."

The food was donated by the USDA and will help to feed one thousand households.
