COLQUITT COUNTY, GA (WALB) - People in Colquitt County are on alert after a weekend of terror.

In a matter of hours, Sheriff's deputies responded to a murder and three violent home invasions. The gunmen wounded three people and stole hundreds of dollars. People too afraid to go on camera with us say their sense of security has also been taken away.

Colquitt County Sheriff's deputies have been working non-stop. "Had a booming weekend," said Captain Hal Suber with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office.

They've been investigating a weekend of violence throughout the county that started Saturday night in the 800 block of Sardis Church Road. "We sent deputies out there. They found a hispanic male laying in the driveway and he was dead on arrival," said Suber.

Bernardino Perez was found bleeding from the head and stomach from apparent gunshot wounds. "That's just one incident to take place," said Suber.

The homicide happened at about 10:30 Saturday night. About an hour later, deputies responded to a home invasion on Circle Road where two men were shot and robbed.  One was shot in the groin, the other in the knee.

One of three suspects even held a gun to a child's head. "And said 'give up the money or we'll hurt the child'. So they gave up the money," said Suber.

About $900 in cash was stolen along with food stamps and social security cards. Then just before 5 Sunday morning, there was a home invasion on Church Street South in Funston. "A black male kicked the window in and entered the house. The burglar alarm went off and woke the female up in the house. She got her gun and walked down the hallway," said Suber.

The 62-year-old woman found a man wearing gloves and a mask in her kitchen. He fired two shots. She fired back. "Subject turned around and ran out of the house," said Suber.

Not too far away on Old Doerun Road, Ronnie Livingston heard a knock at the door at about 5 in the morning. When he opened, a man tried to force his way in. "He tried to shut the door back and he was shot in the upper torso underneath the arm," said Suber.

Authorities are working to determine the connection between all of the crimes. "We're thinking at least two of them are connected. A green Ford Expedition was spotted at two of them. We're looking into that now," said Suber. As they investigate, they want residents to up their vigilance by keeping doors locked and their eyes and ears open.

The two men shot on Circle Road are recovering and will be fine. At last check, Livingston remained in critical condition at the hospital.

The Funston woman's family says she is still shaken up from the violent ordeal.

If you have any information that could help authorities, call the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office at 229-616-7430.
