ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There's bad news about your property taxes.  They will go up this year.

The General Assembly agreed to fund Homestead Tax Relief Grants for this year but from now on the money for those grants will only be sent to counties if the state has excess revenue.

There's no way that will happen this year so counties will pass on the higher bills to you. Lawmakers also failed to pass a bill that would have exempted more of your home's value from property tax.

"This Fall their bill is going to increase by that $317 because the state will not be funding that this Fall and that would have mitigated it a little bit. It would have helped. That $79 would have helped a little bit," said Tax Director Denver Hooten.

The Homestead Relief Grant value varies county to county based on your local millage rate but it's around $300.
