AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The American Red Cross hosted Thursday night's ball for the troops. The organization serves an important role for the U.S. Military.

The Red Cross is mandated by Congress to provide communications between the military and their family members.

"We are on call 24 hours a day. We get to celebrate births and we get to cry with them during deaths. So we are actually become a part of their extended family," said Red Cross Executive Director, Leisa Cross.

The Red Cross also assists with disasters overseas just as they do here in the U.S.
