More West Nile Virus

November 15, 2002

Lee County-- A 22-year old quarterhorse was put to sleep November fifth after the deadly virus paralyzed the animal.

Owner Mary Williams says the animal appeared to be fine, but suddenly went stiff in the legs. At first she thought the animal had encephalitis, but quickly discovered that was not the case.

"That is the symptoms of encephalitis, from getting stiff," said Williams. "They said no, west nile, he tested positive. Now it was a shock, I'm going to start crying here."

A lab in Tifton confirmed the horse was infected with West Nile Virus. Mrs. Williams says she has notified all of her neighbors, and has vaccinated the rest of her horses.
