ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Experts say the sooner you begin the cleanup, the better chance you have of avoiding mold problems. You should never use a heater to dry out a home.
Cross-ventilation is the most effective way to dry out the interior of a structure.
"After you have removed the damaged materials, the gypsum board, sheetrock, carpeting, bedding all these things that are damaged need to be taken out," said architect David Maschke. "You want to wash down all the surfaces with a bleach mixture of five parts water to one part bleach."
Experts say you can do the clean up yourself. The Southwest Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has a guide with tips you need for cleaning up after a flood.
