Stone doesn't like consolidation vote procedure

By Karen Cohilas - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County commissioner Jack Stone says voters should not have a say-so in city-county consolidation because the vote itself wouldn't be fair.

He claims people in the unincorporated parts of the county won't have an equal voice.   If it comes up for a vote, there would be two referenda, one for city voters and one for county voters. People in the city would vote in both.

Stone thinks city voters will outnumber county voters and control the outcome no matter what people in unincorporated areas want.

"I believe in letting people vote, but when they don't get a fair shake and most of the people I represent is in the unincorporated area, I can't vote to put it on there because I'm voting to put them in jeopardy."

Stone says that's why he voted against the county moving forward with consolidation two years ago. He says he plans to continue try to keep the process from going ahead because that's what his constituents want.
