CUTHBERT, GA (WALB) - Blue police lights lit up the night sky in the 200 block of 1st Street in Cuthbert. That is where Willie Lee Tells Junior opened fire on two veteran police officers.

Cuthbert Police chief Bobby Wiggins got the call about the shooting shortly after 11:30 PM Saturday night. This led to an intense multi-agency manhunt for Tells Junior. "It's kind of sad that it had to happen right here in the city," said a man who heard the shots.

Georgia State Patrol, and Randolph County deputies assisted Cuthbert police with the search. They combed the city streets as Georgia Bureau Investigators gathered evidence at the crime scene. "It's a shock to the city. It's sad for it to be on the news."

Sammy Coleman and James Mock were attempting to make a routine traffic stop that turned into anything but, after Tells Junior pulled into 235 1st Street. That was where he opened fire, hitting both officers in the head.

"It's very seldom that we have a shooting, or something like that." James Mock is the former police chief of Cuthbert and was treated and released. He even went back to the crime scene later that night.

Sammy Coleman stayed in the hospital over night. "We are sad that it happened, and we don't want to look down on our officers."

As investigators recreated the crime scene, officers worked hard to find the man who injured two of their own. "It is what it is. We can't turn back the hands of time. If we could, we would."

Police still don't know the motive for these shootings. Willie Lee Tells Junior is now facing two charges of aggravated assault on a police officer. Officer Sammy Coleman remains hospitalized Sunday night. He is listed in good condition at the Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Center.
