New politicians could be good for agriculture

November 14, 2002

TIFT CO. - Peanut farmers are hoping the changing face of Washington after last week's elections will be good for them. The Peanut commission's lobbyist told farmers Thursday morning that new Republican committee leaders in the Senate will likely be more sympathetic to their needs. One of the things they'll be working on is changing the new farm bill to increase peanut exports.

Lobbyist Bob Redding said, "Our goal is to get the loan repayment rate lower so there is an incentive to get peanuts moving again and back with the customers in the world marketplace.

Some other things peanut farmers would like to see on Congress' agenda, disaster relief because of a bad crop related to the weather this year, and making sure payment limits aren't diminished.
