Dews celebrates 50 years of spring training

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL (WALB) - Major league baseball teams will break spring training camps this weekend and head north to start the season.

This year Edison's Bobby Dews marked a special milestone in working in his 50th spring training.

Dews started his springs as player and for the last 30-plus years has been attending spring as coach, minor league manager and consultant.

The longtime Braves coach and minor league manager just finished his 50th spring training.

Bobby Dews has been in the Braves organization since 1975.

During that time, he has been a coach at the big league level, a minor league manager and was the field coordinator in their minor league system.

During his time overseeing minor league instruction, the Braves farm system produced many major league players like Chipper Jones, Javy Lopez, Ryan Klesko and Andruw Jones.

For the last three years, Bobby has served as consultant where he does a number of different jobs but still gets put on a uniform for spring training and home games.

Bobby Dews said. "I have a good job. I still have a chance to learn something every day and do what I enjoy doing for a lifetime."

Bobby Dews is also a writer and his latest book "Illusion of Victory" was released last month.

Bobby says the book is collection of short stories. Many dealing with baseball but Bobby says the book is geared to getting more young people interested in reading.
