ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Emergency responders are not laughing about an April Fool's joke.

In fact they're trying to decide whether to file criminal charges.

Investigators say about 2AM an Albany teen called her Aunt and said a family member had driven off the Oglethorpe Bridge and landed in the river.

It was a misguided April Fool's joke, but the Aunt thought it was true and called 9-1-1.

Two fire trucks, a rescue boat, four Police Officers, and an ambulance crew responded.

Albany Fire Department Chief James Carswell said "We actually had to react as if it was a real call. We launched a boat. Trying to navigate the river coming back up is always treacherous, especially me in the middle of the night. We took resources away from maybe making another call, to a real emergency. Which is not funny at all."

Investigators are still looking into whether charges should be filed or whether the family should be forced to reimburse the county for the cost of the call.

That would be thousands of dollars.
