ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Terrell County Commissioners Wednesday asked the Justice Department for more time to complete their new jail.

An order from the Justice Department required the county to open the jail by April first, but the county hasn't met the deadline. Fencing around the new jail still needs to be completed before the facility could be occupied.

Wednesday county attorney Ed Collier told WALB he's asked for a court order that would extend the deadline by a month. Justice Department officials were in Terrell County to inspect the new facility.

Sheriff John Bowens and Terrell County Commissioners have been at odds over staffing for the new jail. Both sides say they're continuing to work toward an agreement that won't cost taxpayers more.
