Albany - A written policy could have averted the controversy over naming Dougherty County buildings after people. On Monday, county commissioners decided to write a policy about naming buildings.

Commissioners disagree on the wording. Commissioner Lamar Hudgins wants to avoid ever naming buildings after a person. But, other commissioners say the policy should outline criteria for putting someone's name on a building.

"We need to put something on paper," said Commissioner Brenda Robinson-Culter."We can't just say we've always done it that way and so that's how it is."

Commissioners recently voted against naming the new government center after former fireman Johnnie Johnson. He is credited with desegregating the Albany workforce.
