State issues fines for gas retailers charged with price gouging

Pelham, GA (WALB) -  Seven south Georgia gas stations are among the 35 now cited for gouging customers in September after Hurricane Ike.

Of the more than two thousand complaints received by the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs, 61 cases have been resolved, 26 with a finding of no price gouging.

Aden's Minute Markets in Pelham and Meigs Georgia were on the initial list of complaints, but now the J&P Shop & Stop on West Jackson Street in Thomasville and the Pilot Station on 16th Avenue in Cordele have been added to the list. The state continues to investigate complaints in Crisp, Mitchell, Thomas and Tift Counties and customers say they should.

"You talk about how the economy is now, it's in a big recession right, and like I say everybody getting laid off you know, you kind of need all the money you can get," said Customer Michael Backey.

"If somebody committed a crime six months ago, I mean it doesn't mean they get a reprieve from that because six months has gone by, so I think they should," said Customer Scott McDaniel.

Stations found to be gouging have been fined and some have been ordered to pay customers restitution. To see a complete list of the stations log onto the website at walb.com. To claim restitution you must have your receipt.
