Back under center

Valdosta, GA (WALB) -

One of the biggest question marks for the Valdosta State football team this spring is at the quarterback position.  The race for a starting quarterback is wide open and that former Dougherty star Ronnye Nelson is joining the race.

Nelson hasn't taken a snap under center since his days at Dougherty High.

"They asked if I could play the position again I just told them whatever they need me to do I'll do it" said Nelson.

Nelson is coming off a great year at runningback but with the Blazers thins at quarterback he could be taking the snaps this fall.

"He's such a smart football player and he's such a good athlete. It's basically been pretty natural for him he's made a lot of great decisions for us at the quarterback position. He's made a lot of great throws in scrimmage situations" said head coach David Dean.

Nelson said "It's been a pretty easy transition, I have Russ Callaway he's helping me pick up some things Coach Dean is there guiding me in a good direction and my recievers are telling me everything and my o-line they're doing a good job right now."

David Dean says the three best candidates for the starting job are Russ Callaway, Austin Roberts, and Ronnie. Only Callway has game expierience in a Blazer uniform.

"Everybody's got to get their feet wet at some point or another and fortunately for us we have good skill guys around him. He doesn't have to make every single play he's got an opportunity to make plays for us but all he has to do it get it in the hands of our playmakers" said Dean.

From high school quarterback to college runningback, and possibly college quarterback, Ronnye Nelson just wants to help his team win.

The VSU spring game is Saturday, April 4th at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
