ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The fiscal year is wrapping up for the Dougherty County school system, but they still don't know how much money will be funneled down, or held back by the state.
The school board finance committee met Monday morning to discuss money that may be in the pipeline for this year and next, and what cuts they are facing. There are preliminary indications that the system will receive federal stimulus funds for title one schools and special education.
Board chairman David Maschke says a proposal to furlough teachers for six days in order to save money, is not an option he plans to consider.
"It makes no sense to me to furlough teachers when teachers are the main crux of what we're about here. Whether it's an actual in school day or teacher workday, or workshop day, everyone of those days is critical and we're not going to be furloughing teachers."
Tuesday morning, the school board personnel committee is meeting. They plan to take a look at the system's reduction in force policy.
