BROOKS COUNTY, GA (WALB) - The State Supreme Court has overturned a south Georgia man's double murder conviction.

In 2004, a Brooks County jury convicted Freddie Lee Davis of murdering his sister, Bernice Thomas, and her boyfriend, James Newsome. Prosecutors said Davis beat both victims to death with a heavy object and stole Newsome's recent lottery winnings.

The justices ruled that the jury was not instructed on the guidelines for a conviction based on circumstantial evidence and that the evidence against Davis was not strong enough to prove his guilt.
