Estero, FL (WALB) -

The South Georgia Wildcats opened up the 2009 season with a dramatic 54-53 win on the road against division rival Florida Saturday night.

South Georgia escaped with the win after a missed 23 yard field goal from Florida kicker Garrett Rivas with 3.3 seconds remaining.

"I was watching their kicker in pre game and I know it's been a problem for them as a team over the last few years. I was hoping like heck they'd try the field goal. I was actually begging the guys on the other side to go ahead and kick it and give the guy a chance and they gave him a chance and fortunately for us, unfortunately for them he didn't make it" said South Georgia head coach Rodney Blackshear.

Quarterbacks Darnell Kennedy and Cecil Lester shared time under center with Kennedy playing the 1st and 4th quarters while Lester played in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters.

Kennedy went 10/15 with 100 yards and 2 TD's. He also rushed for a TD.

Lester completed 14/26 for 162 yards and 4 TD's.

After the game Blackshear said it's still too soon to name a starting quarterback.

"We're gonna go by practice again, we have to I can't justify sitting any one of the guys long term right now based on that game" said Blackshear.

The Wildcats are 1-0 and will host Florida Saturday at the Albany Civic Center.
