ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County EMS director Bobby Tripp and one of his paramedics were honored by their peers this week.

Tripp was named EMS Director of the Year for Region 8, which includes 27 counties in South Georgia.

Paramedic Tammye Atkinson became the first individual recipient of the award for service to children by an EMT.

She was honored for organizing an event at the Civic Center to encourage high school juniors and seniors to not drink and drive.

Tripp says that both awards are part of a total team effort.

"So when you see people like this, who get these kind of awards, it really makes you proud to be associated with such great service and great people," he said.

For Atknison, her award came as a surprise.

"I was excited, I was shocked because I had no idea. I had no idea I was even nominated for it," she said.

Atkinson says that she hopes to organize another event like the one that won her an award next year.
