LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Some Lee County neighbors won their first battle against an apartment complex at their back doors.

A standing room only crowd filled a Lee County Planning Commission public hearing Tuesday night.

People who live in the Highland Crossing sub-division oppose a rezoning request by Highland Land Company.  The company wants to build Highland Village, a three-story apartment building for seniors.

Kyle Crenshaw says the project would provide no buffer to his neighborhood... and he questions the need for it.

"We just came together as a neighborhood and decided to fight this because we don't want property values to go down. The economy is already bad. Essentially, we're just trying to protect our investments," said Kyle Crenshaw, Highland Crossing Resident.

The Planning Commission denied the rezoning request.  Lee County Commissioners will have the final say-so.

Developer George McIntosh insists the project would have a major economic impact on the county.
