ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Drug cartel violence and murders in Mexico prompted a South Georgia church youth group to cancel its summer ministry trip.

Albany First Methodist's Hosanna Youth Choir was scheduled to work at two Mexican orphanages the first week in June.

But youth minister Joel Diaz visited, and says it's just too dangerous. So the church reluctantly canceled the mission trip, right when he says they need it most.

First Methodist Youth Minister Joel Diaz said "the economic crisis in the U.S. has hurt them. They are starting to lose financial support from churches on the U.S. side of the border, for those orphanages. And then on top of that the U.S. basically telling us all not to go down there."

The choir changed its plans and will now work with the homeless in Las Vegas, where the home foreclosure rate is among the worst in the nation.
