Blackwell wants answers after firing

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Darton women's basketball coach Laura Blackwell has been fired.

Blackwell says athletic director Mike Kiefer notified her in a meeting last Wednesday she was being relieved of her coaching duties.

Blackwell will remain as a physical education teacher.

She says Kiefer only would say he wanted to take the program in a new direction.

Blackwell also met with college president Dr. Peter Sireno who told her he supports Kiefer's decision.

It is a decision Blackwell is having a hard time understanding.

Darton was 18-14 this season and Blackwell says she has just two losing seasons in her 14 years.

Darton won three state titles from 1998 through 2001 and was the regular season champion two years ago.

Athletic director Mike Kiefer told WALB News 10 Sports Monday afternoon he is appreciative of Blackwell's efforts with the women's basketball program.

Kiefer said he feels the resources are in place for the Darton basketball program to compete at an even higher level and that is what he says Darton will be looking for in their next head coach.

Blackwell says her assistant coach Erica Henry has also been dismissed.

Laura Blackwell said. "You do something for this long and you feel like you are doing a good job. Then all of a sudden it is just taken from me without any explanation. It is not easy.

Blackwell is upset because she says no one has given her a specific reason for her dismissal after she has had just two losing seasons in 14 years at Darton.
